Interstate 40 East Closure Set for Weekend Repairs in Asheville
ASHEVILLE – Travelers in Asheville should prepare for a temporary closure of Interstate 40 East this weekend. Weather permitting, construction crews will conduct essential rehabilitation work on a bridge section between I-26 and Hendersonville Road (Exit 50).
DBA Harrison Construction Co. of Asheville has scheduled the closure from 8 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. The work focuses on the eastbound bridge spanning Hominy Creek and Hominy Creek Road, requiring the closure of I-40 East from the I-240 East/I-26 West interchange (Exit 46B) to Hendersonville Road (Exit 50).
Motorists are advised to follow the primary detour route via I-240 East. Digital signs are in place to guide drivers, indicating the closure ahead on I-40 East and directing them to use I-240 East. The ramp from I-26 West to I-40 East will be closed, with message boards instructing drivers to proceed to I-240 East. Additionally, traffic from the Brevard Road onramp to I-40 East will be diverted onto I-240 East.
This closure is part of a $27.9 million interstate rehabilitation project aimed at resurfacing roads and maintaining bridges to prolong their lifespan. The project includes repairing spalling concrete on various bridge components, such as piers, and enhancing the driving surface on four I-40 bridges over Hominy Creek and two over the French Broad River. The entire project is anticipated to be completed by spring 2026.
