Wisconsin DHS Alerts Partners of Phishing Scam Impersonating Staff

Wisconsin DHS Warns of Phishing Scheme Impersonating Staff Members

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has issued a warning about a recent phishing campaign targeting its partners. This scheme involves emails that masquerade as communications from DHS staff, aiming to extract personal and credential information.

The fraudulent emails vary in content but share a common tactic: they impersonate DHS personnel and include a link purportedly for reviewing or submitting a bid proposal. This link redirects users to a counterfeit Microsoft login page, where they are prompted to enter their credentials.

DHS will never ask anyone to click a link to enter personal information.

Recipients of such emails are advised to delete them immediately. Those who have clicked on the link should contact their Information Technology (IT) department without delay. Some affected mailboxes have had rules set up to conceal activity, adding to the deception.

Email Security Tips

This incident serves as a crucial reminder for both DHS partners and all residents of Wisconsin to prioritize email security. Here are some essential tips:

  • Exercise caution with links and attachments, particularly from unknown senders.
  • Be wary of requests that seem unreasonable or demand urgent action.
  • Hover over links to scrutinize the displayed URL. Phishing attempts often involve minor misspellings or altered domain names.
  • Phishing emails may appear to be from trusted sources. If something feels off, verify the request through alternate means, and avoid replying directly to the sender.
  • Forward any suspicious emails to the appropriate IT or security team for action.
  • To report a scam or lodge a complaint, visit the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection’s Consumer Protection webpage, or contact the Consumer Protection Hotline at (800) 422-7128 or via email at DATCPHotline@wisconsin.gov.
