Dallas Park and Recreation Implements Measures to Protect Eagle Family

Protective Measures Intensify at White Rock Lake as Eaglets Prepare for Flight

The bald eagle family nesting at White Rock Lake is under close watch by Dallas Park and Recreation as their eaglets start the crucial process of learning to fly. In an effort to safeguard these majestic birds, visitors are encouraged to keep noise levels to a minimum and ensure dogs are leashed, with signs posted near the nest to remind them.

This week, plans are underway to place water-filled barricades around the nesting site. Consequently, this will temporarily disrupt vehicle access on East Lawther Drive between the playground and the Dreyfuss split. Visitors should anticipate minor delays, and cyclists are urged to slow down in the vicinity. The playground will be closed once the barricades are set up.

Despite these changes, the Dreyfuss area, White Rock Trail, and Lake Highlands Drive will remain accessible to walkers and bikers.

The eagle family, which includes three eaglets, is entering a phase known as branching, where young birds begin to explore their flying capabilities. During this period, it is common to see them on the ground or perched on low branches as they hone their skills.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife officials, this is a delicate time for the eaglets, who may fall from heights or seem distressed during their flight training. Adult eagles might also exhibit increased protective behaviors. Officials advise maintaining a safe distance to avoid any disturbances to the eagles or park visitors.

With bald eagles being protected under federal law, Dallas Park and Recreation is collaborating with Texas Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to ensure the eagle family’s safety.
