Join Dr. Guy Sims in Philly’s “To Be Free” Oral History Project

Explore Freedom: Join the “To Be Free” Oral History Project in Philadelphia

This spring, Philadelphia residents have a unique opportunity to engage in a dialogue about freedom with Dr. Guy Sims. As part of an innovative oral history project, “To Be Free,” Dr. Sims is touring 11 libraries throughout the city, inviting community members to share their thoughts and experiences.

Philadelphia has long been a cradle for new ideas about liberty, dating back 250 years. Today, the Free Library of Philadelphia is continuing this tradition by asking citizens to reflect on what freedom means to them now. This initiative encourages participation from individuals across all neighborhoods.

The project aims to capture these reflections through recordings, which will be preserved as a time capsule for future generations. Participants of all ages are welcome, with a special invitation extended to children to express their ideas through drawings on coloring sheets, depicting what freedom looks like to them today.

“To Be Free” is part of the America250 celebration, comprising hundreds of Free Library programs designed to bring important civic discussions to every Philadelphia neighborhood. For more information on this project and other events, including exhibits, arts, and music, visit freelibrary.org/250.
