Safety Project Begins on U.S. 23/74 in Waynesville to Improve Traffic Flow

WAYNESVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation is set to enhance safety on a crucial stretch of U.S. 23/74, with work scheduled to commence as early as Monday. This project aims to improve traffic flow and safety between Hyatt Creek Road and the Haywood County rest area.

CRW Land Services LLC, based in Old Fort, has been authorized to implement daily lane closures on the inside lane in both directions from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The initiative, which focuses on access management, includes the creation of a new left turn lane for westbound traffic. Additionally, the existing U-turn lane and associated bulb-out for vehicles traveling eastbound will be eliminated. To further enhance safety, a concrete median island will be constructed to clearly define the new turn lane and separate opposing traffic directions. This will be complemented by long-life pavement markings and updated signage.

Developed in collaboration with NCDOT Traffic Safety staff, the $216,000 project is designed to alleviate congestion and improve the overall mobility and reliability of the corridor. The completion of the project is anticipated by fall 2024.

Transportation officials urge drivers to stay vigilant, adhere to posted signs, and exercise caution in this and all other work zones.
