Ron Herring Takes Charge of Election Security in North Carolina
Ron Herring has been appointed as the new director of election security and enforcement for the North Carolina State Board of Elections. This announcement was made by Executive Director Sam Hayes, and Herring’s appointment is effective immediately.
With nearly three decades of experience in managing complex law enforcement and security operations at the federal level, Herring is no stranger to high-stakes environments. His career has spanned leadership roles in multi-agency investigations focused on major issues such as transnational crime, national security threats, and sophisticated financial and cybercrimes.
Herring’s most recent role was in senior leadership at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces program. There, he was responsible for coordinating intelligence-driven initiatives, overseeing field office operations, and enhancing collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies.
In addition to his DOJ work, Herring has served as a supervisory criminal investigator with Homeland Security Investigations. His work encompassed leading significant initiatives against drug and human trafficking, financial crimes, and immigration fraud.
“Ron’s impressive background and decades of experience stood out amongst the other candidates, and this appointment will further our mission of providing comprehensive election security for the people of North Carolina,” stated Director Hayes. “I am confident Ron will bring valuable knowledge to our existing investigations unit and further enhance the public trust in North Carolina’s elections security.”
Throughout his extensive career, Herring has been involved in overseeing sensitive investigations, directing national enforcement programs, and forming task forces dedicated to national security and public safety. He notably contributed to security operations during Barack Obama’s inauguration and was honored with the Southern District of Texas U.S. Attorney’s Award for his efforts in dismantling a major international drug trafficking network.
Herring hails from Mount Olive and is an alumnus of Southern Wayne High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science in business administration/management from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
In his new role, Herring will be responsible for leading investigative activities, supporting election security measures, and partnering with federal, state, and local entities to safeguard the integrity of North Carolina’s electoral process.
“Election security is an integral part of building and maintaining confidence in North Carolina’s elections,” remarked State Auditor Dave Boliek. “Having professionals like Mr. Herring on board as director of election security and enforcement will go a long way in helping ensure it’s easy to vote and hard to cheat in our elections.”
