Interstate 40 Bridge Rehabilitation to Cause Weekend Closures
ASHEVILLE – This weekend, a crucial section of Interstate 40 will be closed to facilitate significant rehabilitation efforts on a bridge located between I-26 and Hendersonville Road, contingent on favorable weather conditions.
Commencing at 8 p.m. on Friday and continuing until 6 a.m. on Monday, the section from the I-240 East/I-26 West interchange at Exit 46B to Hendersonville Road at Exit 50 will be inaccessible. This closure is part of ongoing works by DBA Harrison Construction Company of Asheville, focusing on the eastbound bridge crossing Hominy Creek and Hominy Creek Road.
To manage traffic flow during this closure, a primary detour through I-240 East will be in effect. Motorists will be informed via digital signs to take I-240 East due to the closure of I-40 East. Additionally, the ramp from I-26 West to I-40 East will be closed, with message boards directing drivers to proceed to I-240 East. The onramp from Brevard Road to I-40 East will also be non-operational, redirecting traffic to the designated I-240 East detour.
This weekend’s scheduled activities include the hydro-demolition of aged concrete from the bridge deck, followed by the application of a modified concrete to enhance the driving surface.
The broader $27.9 million rehabilitation project encompasses resurfacing roadways and overlaying bridges. It also addresses the repair of spalling concrete on bridge substructures, such as piers, and aims to improve the driving conditions on the four I-40 bridges over Hominy Creek as well as two bridges over the French Broad River. The project is slated for completion by spring 2026.
