NCDHHS Hosts Fireside Chat on Youth Tobacco Cessation Support Strategies

North Carolina to Host Event on Youth Tobacco Cessation

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is set to engage the community in a crucial discussion regarding youth tobacco cessation. The event, featuring a live fireside chat and tele-town hall, will take place on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. It aims to provide valuable insights for parents and health care providers who are working to support young people in quitting tobacco use.

Featured Participants

The panel will feature notable participants, including:

  • Kim Bayha, NCNTT, Tobacco Cessation Director, Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch, NCDHHS
  • Brittany Feeling, MPH, CHES, CCMA, Youth Tobacco Prevention Coordinator, Mecklenburg County Public Health
  • Bolu Abe-Lathan, PA-C, DHSc, Physician Assistant – Tobacco Cessation, Duke Health

Addressing Youth Vaping Concerns

In North Carolina, nearly 13% of high school students are reported to use electronic nicotine products. These products often contain high levels of nicotine, posing significant risks to developing brains. Additionally, more than half of middle and high school students who vape express a desire to quit and have attempted to do so.

Discussion Topics and Resources

The upcoming fireside chat and tele-town hall will cover critical topics, such as:

  • Strategies to support youth in quitting commercial tobacco and nicotine use, including Nicotine Replacement Therapy
  • Ways in which health care providers and parents can collaborate effectively
  • Available resources for youth seeking to quit

Young individuals face a variety of challenges in their efforts to quit, including addiction, social influences, mental health issues, and access to care. Resources to assist them in their journey can be found at QuitlineNC.dph.ncdhhs.gov/teens.

Event Accessibility

The event will be streamed live on the NCDHHS Facebook, X (Twitter), and YouTube channels, allowing viewers to submit questions. Additionally, a tele-town hall will enable participants to listen and engage via phone by dialing 855-756-7520 Ext. 134951#.
