Lehigh’s Commitment to a Culture of Inclusivity and Belonging
At Lehigh University, the emphasis on creating an inclusive environment where every member feels valued is more than just a mission statement; it is an ingrained philosophy. This commitment to inclusivity is seen as a cornerstone of both individual and collective success within the university community, promoting personal, academic, and professional growth.
Central to this commitment is the university’s Inspiring the Future Makers strategy, specifically the “A Lehigh for Everyone” initiative. This initiative is crucial for achieving the Future Makers goal, which aims to excel in student outcomes by fostering an environment ripe for intellectual and social engagement. The effort is supported by the Belonging Roadmap, a comprehensive framework designed to embed a sense of belonging into all aspects of campus life.
The Belonging Roadmap builds upon previous initiatives and feedback, evolving naturally from past efforts. It functions as a vehicle for embedding the Principles of Our Equitable Community throughout daily university life, aligning with the Anti-Discrimination Working Group’s focus over the past year. The goal is not to replicate past work but to create a more coordinated and sustainable approach.
By weaving belonging into the everyday fabric of Lehigh, the roadmap aims to establish an environment where everyone can thrive. To achieve this, the university is committed to continually strengthening its approach and assessing its progress.
Belonging Roadmap Steering Committee
The creation of the Belonging Roadmap has been a collaborative process, involving students, faculty, staff, and senior leadership. The roadmap seeks to unify efforts across all university divisions under a shared understanding and consistent metrics, thereby fully integrating belonging into Lehigh’s culture.
A dedicated Belonging Roadmap Steering Committee has been formed, comprising faculty, staff, and students. This committee has been active for several months, guiding the development and implementation of the roadmap.
The Steering Committee plays a strategic role in setting the institution’s belonging priorities, while the “A Lehigh for Everyone” initiative will support initiatives that bring the roadmap to life across campus. Work has progressed throughout the spring and summer, with detailed updates expected soon.
Opportunities for Community Involvement
This initiative encourages community involvement, emphasizing that the work is meant to be pursued collectively. Throughout the semester, opportunities will be provided for participation, including:
- Taking part in facilitated campus conversations
- Engaging in fall programming related to the Chicago Principles and community dialogue
Ultimately, the success of fostering a culture of belonging depends on each individual’s commitment. The university encourages everyone to embrace The Principles of Our Equitable Community and to treat one another with respect and compassion, especially in times of disagreement.
Lehigh University expresses gratitude to all who have contributed thus far and looks forward to continued collaboration in this endeavor.
