NC Health Dept Aids Lodging Establishments After Hurricane Helene

Efforts to Reopen Lodging in Western North Carolina After Hurricane Helene

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), along with local health departments, is collaborating with hotels and motels to ensure they can safely welcome back guests. These establishments are encouraged to submit Emergency Operations Plans to expedite their reopening while infrastructure repairs continue across the region.

NC Health and Human Services Secretary Kody H. Kinsley emphasizes the urgency of these efforts: “We are working quickly to help businesses get back on their feet following catastrophic damage left behind by Hurricane Helene. For either displaced families or tourism, helping hotels reopen is key to supporting recovery in the region.”

Reopening requirements for lodging facilities include having a reliable power source and approved water supply for essential services such as bathing, hand washing, and laundry. Additionally, these establishments must ensure:

  • The premises are free from sewage or wastewater issues.
  • Toilets must be operable, or a contingency plan must be in place.
  • Food or ice made with non-potable water must be discarded.
  • Water fixtures using non-potable sources, like ice machines, should be disabled with clear signage.

State Environmental Health Director Larry Michael notes, “Hotels and motels not only serve as lodging for people who are visiting, they also help volunteers and people who need temporary housing while their homes are being repaired from storm damage. We are working with our local partners to get places back open safely and as soon as possible.”

Lynn Minges, President and CEO of the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association, acknowledges the support of NCDHHS: “This re-opening guidance will help expedite the reopening of impacted businesses and help facilitate the process of business and economic recovery for the region during this important tourist season.”

As western North Carolina continues its recovery journey, many businesses have already reopened. However, travelers are advised to verify road conditions and hotel statuses before setting out, as some road closures persist.

The NCDHHS Division of Public Health has introduced a resource to guide hospitality operators in meeting environmental health and safety standards.
