I-40 Bridge Rehab: Weekend Closure and Detours in Asheville, NC

Bridge Rehabilitation on I-40 Prompts Weekend Closure in Asheville

ASHEVILLE – Motorists traveling through Asheville should prepare for a temporary closure of a portion of Interstate 40 this weekend, as construction crews undertake essential bridge rehabilitation work, weather permitting.

The project, managed by DBA Harrison Construction Company based in Asheville, involves closing the eastbound lanes of I-40 from the I-240 East/I-26 West interchange (Exit 46B) to Hendersonville Road (Exit 50). The closure is scheduled to commence at 8 p.m. on Friday and continue through 6 a.m. on Monday. During this time, workers will focus on the eastbound bridge spanning Hominy Creek and Hominy Creek Road.

To navigate the closure, drivers will be directed to use I-240 East as the primary detour route. Electronic signs will be strategically placed to inform motorists of the I-40 East closure and guide them towards the alternate path. Additionally, the ramp from I-26 West to I-40 East will be closed, with message boards advising travelers to continue on I-240 East. The Brevard Road onramp to I-40 East will also be inaccessible, with traffic rerouted to the I-240 East detour.

Scheduled activities during the closure include milling the areas approaching the bridge, repairing the bridge deck, and applying temporary lane markings.

This effort is part of a comprehensive $27.9 million interstate rehabilitation project aimed at roadway resurfacing and bridge overlays. The project will also address issues related to spalling concrete on bridge substructure components, such as piers, and enhance the riding surface on the four I-40 bridges over Hominy Creek, as well as two bridges over the French Broad River. The entire project is slated for completion by spring 2026.
