Governor Stein Responds to Veto Override on House Bill 87

Governor Stein Responds to Legislative Override of House Bill 87 Veto

In a recent development, Governor Stein has addressed the legislative decision to override his veto on House Bill 87, expressing concerns and outlining potential benefits for public school students. His response highlights the ongoing debate about educational funding and program implementation in North Carolina.

Governor Stein initially vetoed the bill, citing the absence of federal guidance. “I vetoed House Bill 87 because at the time we were awaiting sound guidance from the federal government before opting in,” said Stein. Despite this, the General Assembly proceeded to integrate the state into the program without the awaited federal input.

Highlighting his concerns, Governor Stein pointed out the state’s low ranking in educational spending. “This legislature has dropped North Carolina to second to last in the nation in per public school pupil spending,” he stated. Governor Stein emphasized the importance of increasing public funding for education, vowing to do everything possible to enhance support for public school students.

Despite his reservations, Stein acknowledged potential advantages of the program for students. “I see potential opportunities for public school students to benefit from this program,” he noted. He mentioned ongoing efforts to facilitate donations to scholarship-granting organizations that directly support public school students. Stein is optimistic about revealing more details once federal guidance is provided. He envisions these programs bolstering high-impact educational initiatives such as tutoring, after-school activities, summer learning, and workforce development.
