North Carolina Couple Charged with Insurance Fraud
In a case that underscores the ongoing battle against insurance fraud, North Carolina’s Insurance Commissioner, Mike Causey, has announced the arrests of a Raleigh couple accused of attempting to defraud insurance companies. Gurjant Singh Gill, 42, and Karmpreet Kaur Gill, 41, face charges of insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both of which are felony offenses.
The Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division has reported that the Gills allegedly submitted claims for the same roof damage to multiple insurers within a span of less than two years. After securing a settlement for roofing damage from State Farm on October 10, 2025, they reportedly attempted to claim an additional $30,000 from Homesite Insurance for the identical damage, as outlined in the arrest warrants.
On May 21, the couple turned themselves in at the Wake County Sheriff’s Office and were subsequently released on a $5,000 secured bond each.
Commissioner Causey has emphasized the impact of insurance fraud on the community, noting, “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.” He urges residents to report any suspected fraud to help maintain lower insurance costs.
Individuals who suspect insurance fraud or other related crimes are encouraged to report their suspicions. Reports can be made anonymously by contacting the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll-free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684. Additional information is available at www.ncdoi.gov.
