Governor Stein Highlights North Carolina’s Support for Military Families

In recognition of Military Appreciation Month, North Carolina is underscoring its unwavering support for the armed forces. Governor Stein has announced initiatives that highlight the state’s dedication to servicemembers and their families, reflecting a long-standing tradition of military engagement.

North Carolina’s Military Legacy

North Carolina boasts the fourth-largest military presence in the United States. It is home to the world’s most populated Army base and the primary east coast base for the Marines. The state accommodates over 90,000 active-duty personnel, more than 40,000 National Guard and Reserve members, over 600,000 veterans, and nearly 150,000 military family members.

Honoring Our Servicemen and Veterans

An example of North Carolina’s rich military heritage is Major Joe Balogh, a World War II veteran from the U.S. Army Air Corps. Last year, Governor Stein honored Major Balogh, who flew 106 missions in his C-46, surviving being shot down twice, by inducting him into The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

Major Balogh’s story is emblematic of the sacrifices made by all servicemen and women, who choose careers that often separate them from their families and place them in harm’s way out of love for their country.

State Initiatives for Veterans and Military Families

Governor Stein has enacted two bipartisan bills to support veterans in North Carolina. These measures facilitate the enrollment of veterans’ and servicemembers’ children in public schools and offer in-state tuition for higher education. Additionally, tuition discounts at UNC System schools have been introduced for veterans.

The state has also partnered with Blue Star Families and the National Governors Association through the Do Your Part State initiative to further assist military families. The Department for Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), led by Secretary Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette, an Air Force veteran, plays a key role in providing support through state veterans homes and veterans service offices (VSOs).

Collaborations and Future Endeavors

Programs like NCWorks at the Department of Commerce connect veterans and military families with job opportunities, aiding their transition to civilian life. The private sector also contributes significantly, as seen with GE Aerospace Foundation’s $500,000 investment in the Heroes MAKE America Program, which prepares veterans for advanced manufacturing careers.

Governor Stein emphasizes a whole-of-government approach to enhancing veterans’ welfare. He is committed to improving health care, housing, and economic opportunities for veterans, aiming to make North Carolina the nation’s most military-friendly state.

Commemorating Service and Sacrifice

As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, North Carolina remembers those who have served throughout history. Memorial Day weekend is a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, ensuring their bravery and legacy are never forgotten.

Governor Stein concludes with a call to action for all North Carolinians to support the armed forces, not just this month, but every month, acknowledging their dedication to safeguarding the nation amidst global uncertainties.
