Governor Stein Criticizes Federal Bill for Potential Harm to North Carolina
Governor Josh Stein has expressed severe concerns about the recent approval of the Senate reconciliation bill by the U.S. House. In his statement, he emphasized the bill’s potentially detrimental effects on both the residents and the economy of North Carolina.
Governor Stein highlighted that the bill could result in more than half a million North Carolinians losing their healthcare coverage. He warned of job losses in the clean energy and manufacturing sectors, predicting that electricity costs could surge by nearly 20%. Additionally, he noted that 1.4 million residents, including 600,000 children, might struggle to afford food without necessary aid. “The bill is a disgrace, and I am disappointed in those who did not stand up for the people they serve,” he stated, criticizing those who overlooked alerts from local leaders and groups about the bill’s dangers.
Governor Stein called on the General Assembly to safeguard the state’s bipartisan Medicaid expansion and food assistance programs such as SNAP. He stressed the importance of reviewing state laws, the budget, and long-term revenue needs. Despite Washington’s actions, Stein assured his commitment to protecting healthcare, jobs, and the well-being of children in North Carolina. “We can and must do better,” he concluded.
