Governor Josh Stein Advocates for Increased Healthcare and Disaster Aid

In a significant move to address the state’s healthcare workforce challenges, Governor Josh Stein recently visited West Henderson High School. There, he engaged with students from the newly established Healthcare Fellows program, designed to support future healthcare professionals. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Henderson County Public Schools, Blue Ridge Community College, AdventHealth Hendersonville, and UNC Health Pardee, offering full financial backing for students pursuing healthcare careers at Blue Ridge Community College.

Addressing Healthcare Shortages

Governor Stein highlighted the pressing issue of North Carolina’s healthcare needs, stating, “North Carolina has the eighth-worst nursing shortage in the nation, and rural communities don’t have enough access to primary care, behavioral health, and dental services.” He emphasized the innovative collaboration between educational institutions and local employers, particularly in the wake of Hurricane Helene, as a model for creating new opportunities for students. Moreover, he urged the General Assembly to pass a comprehensive budget that invests in the healthcare sector to alleviate these workforce shortages.

Budget Proposal for Healthcare

The state’s financial plan for 2025-2027 remains incomplete, with Governor Stein advocating for funding to expand high-demand healthcare job opportunities. His proposal also seeks to enhance North Carolina Area Health Education Centers, aiming to increase the availability of health workforce instructors and simplify the pathway for nursing students to join the profession.

Support for Western North Carolina

During his visit, Governor Stein also participated in an event by the Land of Sky Regional Council, celebrating the resilience of western North Carolinians post-Hurricane Helene. Reflecting on the community’s response to the disaster, he remarked, “In the wake of Hurricane Helene, local governments and community members sprang into action to rescue those in danger and support homeowners and small business owners to get their lives back on track.” He called on Congress and the administration to provide the necessary financial support for ongoing recovery efforts.

Governor Stein’s advocacy includes a February visit to Washington, D.C., where he sought an additional $11.5 billion from Congress for disaster recovery. This funding aims to aid home reconstruction, infrastructure restoration, and local government stabilization, as well as to mitigate future natural disasters. Additionally, as part of the “Rediscover the Unforgettable” initiative with VisitNC, Governor Stein has been actively promoting the region to boost local businesses and tourism.
