Flint, MI – A fresh initiative aimed at empowering students and fostering safer school environments has been introduced by the City of Flint Mayor’s Office. The Community Violence Intervention & Prevention Initiative (CVIPI) Peer Mediation Program is specifically tailored for students in grades 7 through 12. Developed in collaboration with PeaceKeepers Global Initiative – Flint, the program seeks to train students to assume roles as Peer Mediators and Junior Peacekeepers in their educational institutions.
The training, scheduled twice a week, will cover a comprehensive range of skills:
- Conflict mediation
- Non-violence intervention
- Communication skills
- Emotional regulation
- Leadership development
- Peer Mediation Overview
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded a $500 leadership stipend as a recognition of their commitment and newfound leadership skills.
This Peer Mediation Program is a critical component of the city’s extensive strategy to reduce violence, leveraging youth leadership to enhance the safety of school settings. Mayor Sheldon Neeley emphasized the significance of the program, stating, “This program represents proactive leadership. When we equip our young people with the tools to resolve conflict, regulate emotions, and lead with accountability, we are investing in safer schools and a stronger Flint.”
