Flint Celebrates Trey McKenney’s Triumph on the National Stage
Flint, Michigan has long been a breeding ground for basketball talent, and its latest star, Trey McKenney, is no exception. This University of Michigan shooting guard played a pivotal role in leading the Wolverines to victory in the 2026 NCAA National Championship, earning him Big Ten All-Freshman honors and solidifying his place among Flint’s sports legends.
To commemorate McKenney’s achievements and his strong ties to the community, local organizations have come together to organize a celebratory event. On May 14, 2026, “Trey Day” will bring the community together to honor McKenney’s contributions and bask in the glow of his recent triumph.
“Trey McKenney’s rise to a national champion is a source of real pride for Flint and a powerful reminder of what this community produces,” remarked Laurence B. Alexander, Chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint. He emphasized the city’s reputation for resilience and determination, qualities McKenney exemplified throughout the season.
The event, set to take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Riverfront Conference Center, will feature speeches from local dignitaries, including City of Flint Mayor Sheldon Neely, and representatives from Explore Flint & Genesee. Doors open at 3 p.m., and attendees can look forward to receiving a free commemorative T-shirt, available while supplies last.
Mayor Sheldon A. Neeley expressed his pride in McKenney, saying, “Trey McKenney is Flint Strong. His journey from our city to a national championship stage is proof that greatness lives here.” McKenney’s journey to the national championship is a testament to the talent nurtured in Flint.
Before his collegiate success, McKenney had an illustrious high school career. He represented the United States National Team, winning a gold medal at the 2024 FIBA Under-18 AmeriCup. In 2025, he was named Mr. Basketball of Michigan and earned a spot as a McDonald’s All-American.
Amari Steward, executive director of Explore Flint & Genesee, echoed the community’s pride, stating, “We are always proud to see amazing talent come out of Flint & Genesee. Trey McKenney is a star in his own right, but is also proving what we’ve always known — Flint is a sports town!”
