FLINT, Mich. — Excitement buzzed in the air as the City of Flint launched a groundbreaking ceremony for the St. John Street Neighborhood Memorial Park on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Set at the intersection of West Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue, the event marks a pivotal step in transforming the area into a community hub.
The project is designed to honor the legacy of the historic St. John Street neighborhood, while simultaneously creating a communal space for future generations to enjoy. In May, the City finalized a $1.2 million agreement with Gross Construction to spearhead the park’s revitalization efforts.
Funding for this initiative is primarily sourced from a $1 million grant provided by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Spark Program, supplemented by contributions from the City’s General Fund and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Mayor Sheldon Neeley emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “The St. John Street Neighborhood Memorial Park represents an important investment in preserving our community’s history while creating new opportunities for education, recreation, and reflection.” This initiative aims to ensure that the impactful stories of residents and families from the neighborhood remain an integral part of Flint’s tapestry.
Historically, the St. John Street neighborhood was a vibrant, racially diverse community home to Black and immigrant families. The area experienced major disruption in the early 1970s when it was demolished to pave the way for Interstate 475 and industrial growth, resulting in the displacement of thousands of residents.

- A historically themed playground drawing inspiration from past neighborhood structures
- A 50-by-70-foot pavilion dedicated to educational and community events
- Markers that provide historical and interpretive context about the neighborhood’s history
The ceremony was attended by a mix of residents, families with historical ties to the neighborhood, community leaders, and members of the public, all gathered to celebrate the beginning of this meaningful project and to honor the rich history of the St. John Street neighborhood.
