Celebrate National Nutrition Month: Discover the Power of Nutrition

March Marks National Nutrition Month: Promoting Healthful Choices

March 19, 2026

Every year, March is celebrated as National Nutrition Month, aiming to inspire individuals to make better food choices and nurture healthier eating habits. The theme for this year, “Discover the Power of Nutrition,” emphasizes the impact that daily food selections have on our bodies, promoting growth, development, and overall health.

In Barry and Eaton counties, the journey toward better nutrition often begins with the support from the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program at the Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD). Over 2,000 women, infants, and children in the community currently benefit from WIC’s resources.

The WIC program offers eligible families access to nutritious foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support, focusing on critical life stages from pregnancy to early childhood.

Participants in Michigan’s WIC program are provided with benefits to obtain healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, milk, eggs, beans, peanut butter, and infant foods. Additionally, they receive personalized nutrition education and breastfeeding support from knowledgeable staff.

National Nutrition Month, observed each March, underscores the significance of balanced eating and physical activity. This year’s theme aims to reveal how minor nutritional adjustments can significantly enhance health.

During this month, BEDHD urges families to:

  • Fill half their plate with fruits and vegetables
  • Choose whole grains more often
  • Try new healthy foods as a family
  • Seek nutrition support when needed

The WIC program caters to many working families and is crafted to support healthy pregnancies and the growth of children. Families who believe they might qualify for WIC assistance are encouraged to apply by visiting barryeatonhealth.org/WIC or by contacting the Barry-Eaton District Health Department at Barry County: (269) 945-9516 or Eaton County: (517) 541-2630.
