Florida DEP Hosts Student Poster Contest to Celebrate Earth Month

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In honor of Earth Month, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) launched a statewide poster competition aimed at students from grades 4-12, encouraging them to express their creativity while engaging with Florida’s diverse environment through art.

The theme for this year, “See the Seafloor: Discover Florida Beneath the Waves,” emphasized the Florida Seafloor Mapping Initiative, an initiative focused on generating comprehensive, updated, high-resolution maps of Florida’s coastal seafloor. Scientists employ sophisticated technologies, including sonar and LiDAR, to gain insights into underwater terrains, marine ecosystems, and geological structures, which are crucial for coastal conservation and strategic planning.

Each of DEP’s six district offices selected a finalist from three grade-level categories (grades 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12). These selected artworks were evaluated by DEP staff in Tallahassee, where a statewide winner was chosen for each category.

“The creativity and thoughtfulness shown by these students reflect a strong connection to Florida’s environment,” said DEP Secretary Alexis A. Lambert. “Their artwork captures the importance of understanding and protecting our natural resources. Congratulations to this year’s winners and thank you to all who participated!”
