Experience History First-Hand at Olustee Battlefield Reenactment

In commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, Florida State Parks invites you to delve into history not merely through conventional means like books and exhibits but by exploring the very places where it unfolded.

The Battle of Olustee, which occurred on February 20, 1864, represents Florida’s largest Civil War confrontation. This significant event involved over 10,000 troops, resulting in 2,807 casualties after five hours of intense fighting. Recognized for its historical importance, the site was declared Florida’s first historic site in 1912.

“This weekend, visitors can experience history as it happened 162 years ago,” said Chuck Hatcher, Director of Florida State Parks. “From the sights and sounds to the stories of those who lived it, this reenactment brings America’s past to life in celebration of our 250th anniversary.”

Featuring over 1,000 participants, the reenactment provides a vivid portrayal of military and civilian life from the era. Attendees have the chance to explore military camps, observe infantry and artillery drills, and engage in educational activities throughout the weekend. Additionally, music, crafts, and food that mirror the 1860s lifestyle will be available. While the park is reserved for ADA parking, free shuttle services from the Dowling Center will be available. Admission costs $12 for adults, $6 for school-aged children, and is free for preschool-aged children.

The park has also initiated construction on a new Olustee Battlefield Museum. This facility will house exhibits both indoors and outdoors, offering insights into Florida’s Civil War history and events leading to the Battle of Olustee.

Florida’s state parks are committed to preserving not only natural landscapes but also the sites where pivotal moments in our nation’s history occurred.
