University of Iowa to Activate New Water Tower, Enhancing Capacity

The University of Iowa is set to enhance its infrastructure with the introduction of a new, larger water tower. This development, in collaboration with ENGIE, Iowa’s utility operator, is scheduled to commence on March 2, aiming to bolster water storage capacity and meet the growing demands of the campus and health care facilities.

Strategically located in Parking Lot 75, northwest of the football practice fields, the new structure will replace the existing water tower on Hawkins Drive within the UI Health Care university campus. This upgrade aligns with the university’s 10-year facilities plan, aiming to enhance reliability and support future growth.

Key Details of the Transition

Timeline

The transition will begin on March 2, with the new water tower being integrated gradually over the following week, concluding around March 9.

Temporary Water Discoloration

During the initial phase, some users might experience water discoloration due to harmless iron particles being stirred as the system stabilizes. However, the water is safe for consumption. Running the tap for a few minutes can help clear any discoloration, and utility personnel will work to minimize this effect through system flushing.

Permanent Increase in Water Pressure

Once operational, the new water tower will result in a slight, permanent increase in water pressure. While the majority of users may not notice any changes, this could affect those using sensitive laboratory or research equipment.

Plans are in place to dismantle the old water tower later this year. Throughout the transition, UI Facilities Management and ENGIE will maintain oversight to ensure a smooth process.
