A Festive Fourth: Savannah Bananas Bring Unique Baseball Experience to Kinnick Stadium
Over the Fourth of July weekend, fans witnessed a transformation at Kinnick Stadium as it became the stage for two sold-out Banana Ball games, hosted by the Savannah Bananas. Known for their unique take on baseball, the Bananas brought an experience filled with entertainment, featuring dancing players and choreographed entrances that turned the games into a lively celebration of the sport.
The weekend’s excitement was amplified on Friday night when an unexpected thunderstorm rolled in, causing a delay of approximately two and a half hours. Despite the weather, the enthusiasm of thousands of fans remained undeterred, with many choosing to wait out the storm to enjoy the gridiron baseball spectacle.
Adding a special touch to the games, both the Bananas and their opponents, the Firefighters, along with the fans, participated in the Iowa Wave, a heartwarming gesture directed towards patients watching from the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Fan engagement was a highlight of the event, with the Bananas incorporating various interactive elements. Joining them on the field were notable Iowa Hawkeye sports figures, including former quarterback Brad Banks, tight end Dallas Clark, and Spencer Lee, a three-time NCAA wrestling champion and Olympic silver medalist.
This event marked a significant moment for Kinnick Stadium, adding to its history of hosting diverse sports events, such as a men’s wrestling meet and a women’s basketball game in the past.
For those who missed the live action, the excitement and joy of the games can be relived through the available footage on YouTube: Game 1 and Game 2.
