Spotlight on Tiya Walls: Drake’s Student Body President and Leader

Join us as we delve into the lives of those shaping the vibrant Drake University community through our series Voices of Drake. In honor of Black History Month, we spotlight the influential Black figures on campus, featuring Tiya (Ty) Walls, the Student Body President and aspiring graduate student in Business Analytics.

Introducing Ty Walls

Tiya (Ty) Walls, a senior from Chicago, is not only the Student Body President at Drake University, but also a dedicated student pursuing a degree in Information Systems with minors in Cybersecurity and Spatial and Information Technology.

The Significance of Black History Month

For Walls, Black History Month is a crucial period for reflection and education. “Black History Month means we celebrate and acknowledge the struggles my people went through. It also means that education is important because many of the things Black people have done go unrecognized,” she explains.

Choosing Drake University

Walls was drawn to Drake University by its traditions and the flexibility of its curriculum, as well as the opportunity to join the Crew Scholars program.

A Favorite Mascot

Among the aspects of Drake that Walls enjoys most is Griff, the university mascot, who brings cheerfulness to the campus environment.

Personal Growth and Future Plans

The university experience has encouraged Walls to step out of her comfort zone, providing leadership opportunities and the chance to further her education in Business Analytics after graduation.

Mentorship and Involvement

Walls credits Jazlin Coley Smith, director of Crew Scholars, as a significant mentor. Her active roles include being the Student Body President, a mentor with the Coalition of Black Students, and working with the Drake ITS center.

Celebrating Black History Month

Walls hopes the community uses this month to appreciate the cultural and innovative contributions of Black individuals, beyond just their historical struggles.

Influences and Hobbies

Her grandmother has left a lasting impact on her values of faith, integrity, and love. In her free time, Walls enjoys gaming, cooking, and spending time with loved ones.

Advice for Prospective Students

Walls advises future students to embrace change and growth, whether academically, socially, or personally, and to explore all the opportunities Drake has to offer.
