University of Iowa Unveils Revitalized Outdoor Space for Students
As autumn ushers in a new academic term, students at the University of Iowa will have a fresh outdoor area on the west side of campus to enjoy. This new gathering place, known as Quad Green, is set to become a hub for relaxation and recreation.
Located between the College of Pharmacy Building and Hillcrest Residence Hall, Quad Green will feature amenities including a pavilion equipped with outdoor furniture, two pickleball courts, a basketball court, and newly installed sidewalks. These enhancements aim to provide a versatile space for both leisure and physical activities.
The renovations pay homage to the site’s history, as Quad Green is named after the Quadrangle Residence Hall. This residence hall was a fixture in the area from 1918 until it was demolished in 2016 to accommodate the construction of the College of Pharmacy Building, which was completed in 2019. Although the new building occupies part of the former residence hall’s location, Quad Green remains as a preserved segment of the original courtyard. Notably, the original iron gates from the residence hall are undergoing restoration and will be reinstalled to maintain a historical connection.
An enduring natural element of Quad Green is an American hackberry tree that has been standing for over 100 years. The redesign of the space has been meticulously planned to ensure the tree’s preservation, allowing it to continue flourishing in the years ahead.
The completion of the renovations is anticipated in October, marking the full realization of this revitalized outdoor venue for the university community.
