NAU Introduces Cost-Saving Program for Course Materials
In a move to alleviate the financial burden of textbooks for students, Northern Arizona University (NAU) has collaborated with Follett, the university’s campus store partner, to introduce a new initiative this fall. The program, named NAU Axe/ess, aims to make educational resources more affordable and accessible to students across different majors.
The Axe/ess program guarantees that all participating students will have immediate access to their required course materials at the semester’s start, all for a fixed price. This initiative ensures that students have all necessary resources from day one, setting the stage for academic success. For a semester fee of $270, students can acquire all their course materials without worrying about unexpected expenses.
According to a 2025 report from The College Board, students at four-year public universities in the U.S. typically spend around $1,330 annually on textbooks and supplies. The implementation of NAU Axe/ess is expected to reduce these costs by approximately 50%, aligning with the program’s mission to enhance affordability. Moreover, this launch is supported by increased investments in the development of Open Educational Resources, further contributing to long-term cost reductions.
John Georgas, the senior vice provost for academic operations, emphasized the program’s significance, stating, “NAU Axe/ess is an important step in supporting our students’ success and academic momentum, as well as making a college degree more affordable and accessible for students.”
Enrollment in the Axe/ess program is automatic for all undergraduate students registered at the Flagstaff campus or through NAU Online. However, students have the option to opt out if they find the program financially unsuitable for a particular semester. Digital materials will be accessible via Canvas from the first day of classes, while physical materials can be collected at the campus store.
