Reflecting on Sacrifice: A Veteran’s Thoughts on Memorial Day
Memorial Day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by American military personnel. While many mark the occasion with sales, barbecues, and the unofficial start of summer, it holds a deeper meaning for veterans and families who have lost loved ones in service. Air Force veteran and NAU alumnus, Joseph Shaffer III, shares his reflections on this solemn day.
Joseph Shaffer III: A Veteran’s Perspective
Joseph Shaffer III, known for his roles as the director of both the University Honors Program and Arizona Honors Academy at Northern Arizona University (NAU), is also a co-author of “UNSUNG: Quiet Voices of the U.S. Navy’s EOD Warriors and Their Families.” Shaffer’s experiences as a Vietnam veteran give him a unique perspective on Memorial Day.
“Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.” This quote by Franklin Delano Roosevelt encapsulates the essence of Memorial Day, a tradition that began after the American Civil War to honor those who died in service. Originally called Decoration Day, it was officially renamed in 1967 to Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May.
