Drake University is set to become the guardian of an extensive collection of documents belonging to Thomas J. Vilsack, a prominent figure in Iowa’s political landscape and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These materials will be housed at the Cowles Library, offering a unique opportunity for students and researchers to delve into Vilsack’s extensive career.
Formalized at a ceremony in the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates, this acquisition encapsulates over four decades of Vilsack’s public service, spanning his leadership roles as Iowa’s Governor and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
Drake University’s President Marty Martin expressed, “One of the hallmarks of a Drake education is the ability to engage directly with the people and ideas that move our world. To have Secretary Vilsack’s personal and professional history on our campus is a gift to our students.” This collection is expected to enrich the educational experience of those pursuing careers in law, policy, and history by providing access to valuable primary sources.
The archives cover Vilsack’s political journey from the 1980s to today, including his service as Iowa’s Governor from 1999 to 2007 and his record-setting tenure as Secretary of Agriculture. The papers offer insights into both political and personal spheres, reflecting significant periods in Iowa and national political history.
Vilsack, commenting on the significance of this initiative, stated, “I thank Drake University for the willingness to house and preserve these papers. As a history major in college I appreciate the important role researchers have in recording history. I hope this collection aids them in that important task.”
This collection will supplement the university’s existing nonpartisan archive, which is a resource for studying political leadership and public policy. It will join other collections from notable Iowa figures like:
- Governor Robert D. Ray (R)
- Congressman Neal Smith (D)
- State Representative Wayne Ford (D)
- State Representative Ed Bittle (R)
- The Iowa Caucus Collection
Despite not being an alumnus, Vilsack has a longstanding connection with Drake University, having served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law post his gubernatorial career. His work at the Agricultural Law Center has further solidified his ties to the institution.
Once cataloged, the Vilsack collection will be open to researchers at Cowles Library, with plans to digitize select parts for broader access. For more details on the Drake University Archives & Special Collections, visit library.drake.edu/archives.
