Drake University Mourns the Passing of Former First Lady Billie Ray

A Legacy of Service: Remembering Billie Lee Ray, Former First Lady of Iowa

Billie Lee Ray, a distinguished alumna of Drake University and former First Lady of Iowa, has passed away at the age of 97. Her contributions to education and community service have left an indelible mark on the lives of many, both within the university and beyond.

Born and raised in Des Moines, Mrs. Ray attended Roosevelt High School, where she met her future husband, Robert D. Ray. Both pursued higher education at Drake University, where Mrs. Ray earned her degree in education. Her career in teaching began in the Des Moines Public School system, where she taught elementary students before assuming the role of First Lady of Iowa from 1969 to 1983, following her husband’s election as governor.

Throughout her tenure as First Lady, Mrs. Ray championed the causes of education and community empowerment. Her belief in the transformative power of education led to the establishment of The Robert D. and Billie Ray Center at Drake University. This center is dedicated to fostering civility and ethical leadership across various domains, from early childhood education to community and corporate environments.

In recognition of her lifelong dedication, Mrs. Ray was honored with numerous accolades, including the Drake University Alumni Distinguished Service Award and the National Alumni Centennial Award for Service. Her legacy at Drake is further celebrated through the Robert D. and Billie Ray Pillar of Character Award, which was renamed in her honor.

Beyond her contributions to Drake University, Mrs. Ray was actively involved with numerous organizations such as the Terrace Hill Foundation, Iowa Friendship Force, and the Red Cross, among others. In 2000, she was named one of the twelve initial Women of Influence by the Des Moines Business Record. In 2012, she and her husband received the Youth & Shelter Services Outstanding Contribution–Children and Youth Award. The Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside’s Child Development Center in Des Moines was named after the couple, further cementing their legacy.

Mrs. Ray is survived by her three daughters, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Arrangements for her services are being handled by Iles Dunn’s Chapel, with details forthcoming at www.IlesCares.com. The Drake University community offers its heartfelt condolences to the Ray family during this time of mourning.

As we remember Mrs. Ray, let us strive to emulate her dedication to service and community betterment, honoring her memory by making a positive impact in our own ways.

Sincerely,

Marty Martin
President, Drake University
