Drake University Board Welcomes Four New Trustees to Its Ranks

The governance of Drake University has been invigorated with the addition of four new trustees, including Alan M. Byers, John Farmer, Ernest J. Newborn II, and Steve Sukup. This group of distinguished individuals was confirmed by the Board earlier in the year and commenced their three-year term on July 1, 2026.

Drake University President Marty Martin expressed enthusiasm about the appointments, stating, “It is a privilege to welcome these four accomplished leaders to the Drake University Board of Trustees. Their diverse expertise and deep insights will complement our existing trustees as we work to transform lives and strengthen communities.”

Introducing the New Board Members


Alan M. Byers, FA’78

Carrying on a family tradition, Alan Byers steps into his new role on the Drake Board of Trustees. His father, Donald C. Byers, served in the same capacity from 1983 until 2010. Alan Byers has extensive experience in agribusiness, having held leadership roles at JBS USA and other major companies. A Drake alumnus, Byers has contributed significantly to the university’s athletic and philanthropic endeavors, having been honored with the Double D Award in 2025.


John Farmer, AS’92

John Farmer joins the board as an ex-officio member, representing the Drake National Alumni Board as its chair. With a robust background in law and a history of leadership at Charter Communications, Farmer’s involvement at Drake dates back to his undergraduate years, which included athletics and fraternity life. He continues to engage in community service, enhancing the lives of young people through mentorship.


Ernest J. Newborn II, LA’79

After a noteworthy career as senior vice president and general counsel at USI Insurance Services, Ernest Newborn II continues to influence education through his role as chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Strada Education Foundation. His commitment to education and opportunity is mirrored in his active participation and contributions to Drake University and its initiatives.


Steve Sukup

Recognized for his role in leading Sukup Manufacturing Company, Steve Sukup has been instrumental in the company’s growth and innovation. A former Iowa House Representative, Sukup continues his public service by contributing to Drake’s Harkin Institute, playing a key role in its development and outreach efforts. His background in industrial engineering and public policy further enriches his contributions to the Board.
