In a significant development for the University of Iowa, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer Terry Johnson has declared his intention to retire, with his last official day set for April 5, 2027. Johnson’s tenure at the university has spanned over three decades, marking a period of notable contributions and leadership.
Reflecting on his extensive career, Johnson stated, “Serving this university for the past 33 years has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I have been fortunate to work alongside exceptional colleagues, mentor talented students, and contribute to a community dedicated to learning, discovery, and service. While I retire with gratitude for the opportunities and friendships that have shaped my career, I am equally excited to see the university continue to thrive. I will always cherish being part of an institution whose impact extends far beyond its campus, and I leave with deep appreciation for everyone who made this journey so meaningful.”
Johnson’s journey with the University of Iowa began in 1993, leading to his role as associate vice president and university controller by 1997. After serving as interim chief financial officer and treasurer, he officially assumed the positions in February 2016. Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and an MBA from the University of Iowa. His professional credentials include being a certified public accountant.
University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson praised Johnson’s work, remarking, “Terry’s wide-ranging contributions to the university, almost always behind the scenes, have been significant. He is a steadfast leader and a reliable steward of our state and university resources. He has helped us work through complex problems, and the processes he has established will continue to serve the university for years to come.”
To find a successor for Johnson, the university is launching a national search. Leading this effort are co-chairs Peter Matthes, vice president for external relations and senior advisor to the president, and Edith Parker, dean of the College of Public Health. Matthes, appointed to his current role in 2014, has a history with the university as the director of federal relations. Parker, who became dean in 2018, previously held a leadership position in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health.
The university plans to name a search firm and committee in the fall semester of 2026 to facilitate the selection process.
