Jerry Anderson Returns as Interim Dean of Drake Law School
In a notable leadership transition, Drake University has announced the return of Jerry Anderson as the interim dean of its Law School. Anderson, who was the dean from 2016 to 2024 and a faculty member for over 35 years, will take over from Roscoe Jones for a one-year period while a national search is conducted for a permanent successor.
Drake University’s Provost, Joseph M. Valenzano III, expressed his support for Anderson’s appointment, stating, “Professor Anderson is a distinguished scholar and a proven leader whose dedication to this institution spans more than three decades.” Valenzano emphasized Anderson’s institutional knowledge and leadership skills, noting his confidence in Anderson’s ability to guide the community during this time.
Anderson’s previous tenure as dean saw significant advancements at Drake Law, including a 44% increase in the school’s endowment and the creation of innovative programs such as the Refugee Clinic. His leadership was pivotal in enhancing the school’s national reputation and expanding hands-on learning experiences.
Anderson remarked on his new role, saying, “I am honored to step into this role and partner once again with our outstanding community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.” He highlighted Drake Law’s prestigious legacy and his commitment to maintaining its excellence during this transitional phase.
Besides his administrative responsibilities, Anderson holds the title of Richard M. and Anita Calkins Distinguished Professor of Law. He is recognized nationally for his expertise in environmental, administrative, and property law. Notably, he co-authored a pioneering Environmental Law coursebook, now in its fifth edition, which introduced simulation-based learning and is utilized by premier law schools like Stanford and Columbia.
Anderson’s research contributions extend beyond academia, influencing national policies on environmental penalties and public land access. He is actively involved with several prestigious legal organizations, including the American Law Institute and the American College of Environmental Lawyers.
Anderson holds a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School, graduating with Order of the Coif honors, and a Bachelor of Science with distinction from the University of Kansas.
