Provost Sue Mattison shared this development with the Drake University community, emphasizing the collaborative planning involved in the transition. “She and I have been actively discussing the SJMC dean succession plan for months,” noted Mattison, highlighting an ongoing dialogue with faculty and staff that will culminate in a formal announcement at the beginning of the Fall 2025 semester.

Dr. Staub’s leadership has been transformative, marked by numerous achievements. The introduction of the Dean Team Scholars program, which supports first-generation college students, and the creation of the Ross-Kading Fund to enhance student experiences in prominent cities like New York and Washington D.C., underscore her commitment to student success. Under her guidance, the school also became a pilot for Iowa’s Potter Digital Ambassadors program, launched the successful Sports Media and Communication major, and expanded various programs, including Media Now and Winter Thaw.

Her dedication to Drake University is deeply rooted, as evidenced by her academic journey, which began nearly 40 years ago as a first-year student. Dr. Staub’s academic credentials are extensive, including four degrees from Drake: a bachelor’s in education and English, a master’s in journalism and mass communication, a specialist degree in education, and a doctorate in educational leadership.

Beyond her academic achievements, Dr. Staub has served in various roles, including as a graduate assistant and a member of the SJMC National Advisory Council. She has held the prestigious Fisher-Stelter Chair of Magazine and Brand Media and directed the E.T. Meredith Center for Magazine Studies prior to her deanship.

Praising her impact, Provost Mattison remarked, “Naming Catherine as Dean of SJMC is one of the only decisions I’ve made in nine years as provost that literally made every person happy at the same time.” Her tenure is characterized by humility, care, and thoughtfulness, qualities that have left an indelible mark on the institution.

The university community is invited to join in expressing gratitude for Dr. Staub’s remarkable contributions and ongoing support of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s mission. Celebrations of her accomplishments will be held throughout the upcoming year.
