Carnegie Mellon Prepares to Host Exclusive Sports and AI Showcase
Carnegie Mellon University is set to host an exclusive event,
Powering the Future of Sport: A Draft Week Showcase,
aimed at bringing together top investors, innovators, and sports leaders. This invite-only gathering will coincide with one of professional football’s most significant weeks, highlighting the intersection of sports and technology.
“This showcase reflects the spirit of Pittsburgh, a City of Champions where excellence in sport and innovation go hand in hand,” said
Meredith Meyer Grelli, managing director and interim executive director for CMU’s Swartz Center of Entrepreneurship.
“At Carnegie Mellon, we’re proud to bring together founders, industry leaders, and investors who are building what’s next at the intersection of technology, entrepreneurship and performance.”
Exploring AI’s Role in Sports
The event will be held at CMU’s
Robotics Innovation Center at Hazelwood Green, a reimagined former steel mill site now dedicated to advanced robotics and AI.
The Showcase will celebrate Pittsburgh’s dual legacy of innovation and sports excellence.
The event will commence with “Pittsburgh’s Moment,” featuring speeches from CMU President
Farnam Jahanian, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and other city leaders.
A panel titled “The Future of Sport in the Age of AI” will include insights from key figures such as David Morehouse, Executive Vice President for Strategy at the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chip Ganassi, CEO of Chip Ganassi Racing, Josh Helmrich from the NFL, and Priya Narasimhan, founder of YinzCam and CMU professor. These leaders will discuss AI’s transformative impact on various aspects of sport, including athlete performance and fan engagement.
AI Innovations on Display
Attendees will witness live demonstrations at the
Robotics Innovation Center, showcasing AI’s role in sports through advancements in robotics and autonomous systems.
Notable entrepreneur Mark Cuban will also discuss technology’s future alongside Joanna Doven, founder of the AI Strike Team.
Joanna Doven stated, “The future of sport isn’t just about winning games — it’s about who owns the advantage in the next technological era.
The same AI and robotics transforming athlete performance are the same technologies powering trillion-dollar industries like defense and healthcare.”
Startup Competition Highlights Innovation
A central feature of the Showcase is the “Forge to Field AI Pitch Competition,” where emerging AI companies will vie for a share of a $1.75 million prize pool, which includes $1 million in AWS compute credits.
The judges’ panel boasts prominent figures like Mark Cuban, Ed Stack from DICK’S Sporting Goods, Jeanne Cunicelli of UPMC Enterprises, Will Allen, Deap Ubhi from AWS, and Troy Demmer of Gecko Robotics.
This competition underscores Pittsburgh’s emerging status as a hub for AI-driven innovation, with closing remarks to be delivered by U.S. Senator Dave McCormick.
