Broward Schools Return to External Venues for 2026 Graduation Ceremonies

Broward Schools to Revert Graduation Ceremonies to External Venues Following Backlash

The Broward School District’s plan to hold graduation ceremonies in high school gymnasiums has been reversed after significant public disapproval. This decision comes after a backlash from students, parents, and public officials, prompting a change in venue arrangements.

Superintendent Howard Hepburn informed Broward School Board members of the revised strategy in a memo issued late Friday. The initial plan, discussed at a recent meeting, faced strong opposition from the community.

Concerns were raised over the decision to hold ceremonies in gymnasiums for most classes, while a select few would graduate at prestigious venues like the Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood and the Don Taft Center at Nova Southeastern University.

An analysis revealed that while a high school gym graduation costs about $3,000, ceremonies at NSU and Hard Rock Live cost approximately $25,000 and $50,000, respectively. The district had initially planned to use these external venues for only the 11 largest classes to save $500,000 in graduation expenses.

The proposal gained preliminary approval in October. However, after the plans were publicized in mid-January, the School Board received numerous complaints, prompting them to direct Hepburn to consider alternative solutions.

Superintendent Hepburn addressed the feedback saying, “After receiving extensive feedback from Board members and the community during the January 21, 2026, Regular School Board Meeting, staff will publish a revised graduation schedule next week.” He assured that funding is now secured to ensure that “each school will host its commencement ceremony in the same venue, or a comparable venue, as used in 2025.”

The revised plan also guarantees each graduate a minimum of four guest tickets, irrespective of the venue. Hepburn added, “Staff will continue to collaborate with schools and engage the community as we plan for graduation venues in future years. We look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 and ensuring this milestone remains a meaningful and memorable experience for our students and their families.”

Board member Adam Cervera, a strong proponent for holding graduations at external venues, celebrated the decision, calling it a “big win” for the community. He remarked, “This victory isn’t just about graduation venues — it’s a testament to what we can achieve when neighbors come together, voices are heard, and elected officials listen to their constituents.” Cervera expressed optimism for the district’s future, emphasizing the importance of continued progress.
