Planatome to Double Workforce with New Manufacturing Plant in Phoenix

Innovation in medical technology is taking a significant leap forward with Planatome’s plans to establish a new manufacturing facility in the Phoenix area. This strategic move is set to boost the company’s workforce and expand its influence in the medical device industry.

Planatome’s Expansion Plans

PHOENIX, AZ (February 27, 2024) – Planatome, a pioneer in medical device innovation, is embarking on an ambitious journey to more than double its workforce over the next five years by setting up a new manufacturing plant in Phoenix. The company’s advanced surgical blades, crafted using atomic-level polishing technology from the semiconductor industry, promise improved patient outcomes.

“We are grateful for the support we have received from the Arizona Commerce Authority,” expressed Tim Tobin, CEO of Planatome. “This investment demonstrates that Arizona supports businesses and innovation. Planatome is growing rapidly, and we are expanding the reach of our surgical blades into new practice fields. We are committed to growing our business operations here and a long productive relationship with Arizona.”

Support from Arizona Commerce Authority

In collaboration with the Arizona Manufacturing Extension Partnership (AZ MEP), the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) is extending its support to Planatome. This partnership aims to help manufacturers in Arizona achieve their business objectives by providing resources such as workforce solutions and supply chain optimization.

“Planatome’s new manufacturing facility highlights Arizona’s impressive reputation for emerging technologies and innovation,” stated Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority. “With the planned facility, Planatome will join a growing list of manufacturers making products here in Arizona, adding to our vibrant medical and biotech industry.”

Technological Advancements

Planatome’s patented technology revolves around chemical mechanical planarization (CMP), enhancing the smoothness of surgical blades. Surgeons using these blades report reduced soft-tissue damage, easier incisions, and fewer complications. Patients benefit from decreased inflammation, less pain, quicker recovery, and minimal scarring. The blades are approved for use in the United States and South Korea, with recent endorsements from several hospitals and surgical centers.

The company is investigating the potential of its technology for other medical instruments, including surgical scissors, laparoscopic tools, and robotic end effectors. Beyond medical devices, Planatome’s nano-polishing technology could be adapted for use in various industries requiring atomically smooth surfaces.
