The City of Lathrup Village has taken a significant step forward in its development journey by achieving the Redevelopment Ready Communities (RRC) certification. This prestigious recognition, announced by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), is awarded to communities that demonstrate a strong foundation for attracting private investment and enhancing municipal assets.
MEDC has officially designated Lathrup Village as a Certified RRC, joining an elite group of 89 Michigan communities recognized for their comprehensive planning and zoning initiatives. This designation is crucial in eliminating traditional barriers and facilitating investment opportunities. “Our mission at MEDC is to support Michigan’s strong economic momentum and empower communities to establish a strong planning, zoning and economic development foundation,” stated MEDC SVP of Community Planning & Development Readiness Michele Wildman. With the certification, Lathrup Village is expected to continue its vision for future growth and enhance the quality of life for residents, while building a robust relationship with the MEDC to support local economic growth.
Participating in the RRC program, Lathrup Village underwent a thorough assessment comparing its community and economic development practices against RRC standards. The certification highlights the city’s efforts to integrate transparency, predictability, and efficiency in its development processes, thus making it more attractive for potential investors.
According to Lathrup Village’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Director Austin Colson, “Regaining our Redevelopment Ready Communities certification helps remove uncertainty, streamline development timelines, and gives entrepreneurs confidence that the City is a strong partner in redevelopment and long-term growth.”
DDA Project Coordinator Thomas Kennedy added, “Reacquiring Redevelopment Ready Communities certification is the culmination of years’ worth of hard work that will greatly benefit the city, its businesses and its residents. This achievement will drive the city’s business and professional development forward, and support redevelopment efforts as the city moves towards the future.”
As a certified RRC, Lathrup Village will have access to enhanced tools and support to advance its community development goals, along with continual assistance from the RRC team. The certification remains valid for five years, during which annual reviews will ensure adherence to best practices.
City Administrator Mike Greene expressed, “Being recognized as an MEDC Redevelopment Ready Community affirms Lathrup Village’s commitment to thoughtful planning, transparency, and partnership. This designation strengthens our ability to attract investment, support responsible redevelopment, and ensure that growth aligns with our community’s long-term vision and values.”
