Governor Whitmer’s Switzerland Mission Boosts Michigan’s Global Investment

LANSING, Mich. – In a strategic move to bolster Michigan’s global investment appeal, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has wrapped up a fruitful mission to Switzerland. This initiative aims at fortifying Michigan’s reputation as a prime hub for advanced manufacturing, defense, and high-tech industries, thereby paving the way for job-generating foreign investment within the state.

Governor Whitmer emphasized the importance of Michigan’s active engagement on the international stage, stating, “Showing up matters, and when Michigan has a seat at the table, we’re able to make the case for why our state is the best place to invest, build, and grow.” Her mission in Switzerland not only solidified critical alliances but also highlighted Michigan’s prowess in defense and manufacturing, exemplified by OC Oerlikon’s commitment to expanding its operations in the state.

During the mission, Whitmer participated in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026, engaging with top-tier executives and industry leaders. Notable interactions included discussions with organizations such as Switzerland Global Enterprise, Hilti Group, EMS-Chemie, and Juice Technology AG. These efforts aim to enhance Michigan’s visibility in Europe, foster enduring partnerships, and drive investment decisions.

A significant announcement was made regarding OC Oerlikon’s future growth plans in Michigan, reflecting the importance of maintaining high-level international relationships. This development underscores the role of Michigan’s leadership in securing valuable foreign investments.

Switzerland, a key partner for Michigan, ranks as the ninth-largest source of foreign direct investment in the state. Governor Whitmer’s visit underscored Michigan’s integral role in global supply chains, particularly in sectors crucial to national and economic security.

Quentin L. Messer, Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), remarked, “Investment missions like these, led by Gov. Whitmer and the MEDC, send a clear signal that Michigan is serious, engaged, and ready to win on the global stage.” The mission strengthened ties with global decision-makers, leveraging Michigan’s workforce, infrastructure, and the ‘Make It in Michigan’ strategy to attract future projects and jobs.

Maintaining a robust European presence allows Michigan to remain competitive for international investments, support existing employers, and explore new growth opportunities. This mission is a part of Michigan’s proactive approach to economic development, consistently engaging globally to attract investments and strengthen vital industries for sustained economic prosperity across the state.

This investment mission was supported by the MEDC and the Michigan Economic Development Foundation, an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing economic development initiatives that drive private investment, job creation, and wage growth in Michigan.
