LANSING, Mich. – Governor Gretchen Whitmer is expanding Michigan’s European investment mission by moving from Germany to Italy. This strategic shift aims to enhance international collaborations and attract investments to boost Michigan’s standing in defense, manufacturing, and national security.
After successful interactions with German partners, Governor Whitmer and her team will engage with Italian business and government leaders. The focus will be on showcasing Michigan’s strengths in defense, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, and mobility, with an emphasis on fostering job creation and economic growth.
Accompanying Governor Whitmer are Major General Paul D. Rogers, Adjutant General of the Michigan National Guard, and Colonel John T. Gutierrez, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.), Executive Director of the Office of Defense and Aerospace Innovation at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
“Italy is a key partner for Michigan as we work to strengthen advanced manufacturing, defense capabilities, and innovation-driven growth,” said Governor Whitmer. “By continuing our investment mission in Italy, we’re opening doors for new partnerships, expanding opportunities for Michiganders, and positioning our state to compete and lead in a rapidly evolving global economy.”
Italy’s economic relationship with Michigan is growing, with recent investments in design, mobility, and advanced manufacturing. Since 2019, Italian companies have invested in six projects in Michigan, totaling $227.9 million in foreign direct investment (FDI). Notably, Italian automotive design firm Italdesign announced its U.S. headquarters in Bloomfield Township, marking a $20 million investment and the creation of 24 jobs.
This Italian leg of the mission is part of a broader strategy to attract global investment, bolster Michigan’s existing businesses, and enhance industries critical to the state’s economy and national security.
This investment mission is supported by the MEDC and the Michigan Economic Development Foundation, a not-for-profit organization focused on economic development initiatives that drive private investment, job creation, and wage growth in Michigan.
