Arizona Launches Sustainability Accelerator for Green Startups

The vibrant city of Phoenix, Arizona, is abuzz with innovation as the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) unveils its latest initiative to foster sustainability-focused startups. The launch of the Sustainability accelerator program by Plug and Play accelerateAZ marks a significant step towards enhancing Arizona’s clean energy economy.

Launching the Sustainability Accelerator

In a celebratory event, eight pioneering startups took center stage, pitching their innovative ideas as part of the program’s inaugural cohort. Governor Katie Hobbs, Saeed Amidi, Founder and CEO of Plug and Play, and Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, graced the event alongside corporate partners and local innovation leaders.

Governor Hobbs emphasized Arizona’s pivotal role in the nation’s manufacturing revival, noting, Arizona is at the heart of America’s manufacturing resurgence. The Sustainability program highlights Arizona’s growing clean energy economy and showcases Arizona’s leadership as a destination for sustainable technologies and innovation. I would like to thank Plug and Play and the ACA for their efforts to advance Arizona’s startup ecosystem and expand our sustainability footprint.

Focus Areas and Program Structure

The Sustainability program is designed to nurture startups in sectors such as renewable energy, water resiliency, sustainable mining, circular materials, and carbon neutrality. The initiative plans to accelerate two batches of startups annually, offering them opportunities to collaborate with leading corporate partners.

Sandra Watson expressed her excitement, stating, We couldn’t be more excited to launch the Sustainability Accelerator program. The Sustainability program represents an exciting new chapter to support sustainability-focused startups in our state and build on the success of the Advanced Manufacturing program. We are grateful to Saeed Amidi and the entire Plug and Play team for their valued partnership and look forward to supporting even more startups through the Sustainability program.

Building on Past Successes

The new program complements the existing Advanced Manufacturing program under Plug and Play accelerateAZ, which has successfully propelled 27 startups since its inception in 2023. This program is backed by major industry players like Intel, Honeywell Aerospace, Raytheon Missiles & Defense, and NXP.

Highlighting Plug and Play’s commitment to impactful innovation, Saeed Amidi remarked, We are committed to driving innovation that makes a real difference. Building on the success of our Advanced Manufacturing program, we are excited to bring the same momentum to a new focus in Sustainability. With our new program, we want to empower startups to build a more sustainable future for Arizona and beyond.
