Get ready to embrace the natural beauty of Maricopa County as the Parks and Recreation Department rolls out the welcome mat for outdoor enthusiasts. On Monday, November 17, 2025, in honor of National Take a Hike Day, visitors can enjoy a day of exploration without the usual $7 per vehicle day-use park entry fee, though other fees may still apply.
With over 615 miles of stunning trails, there’s no better occasion to enjoy the cooler autumn weather and perhaps chalk up some extra miles toward the 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge.
“Hiking gives us the chance to step away from the rush of everyday life, breathe in the fresh desert air, and appreciate the incredible beauty of our Sonoran landscape,” remarked Thomas Galvin, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 2. He added that the parks, ranging from the Hassayampa River Preserve in the northwest valley to McDowell Mountain Regional Park in the east valley, offer numerous opportunities to unwind and explore.
Jennifer Waller, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Director, highlighted, “National Take a Hike Day is the perfect time to explore everything our parks have to offer.” She mentioned various ranger-led programs scheduled for November 17, including nighttime scorpion hunts and explorations of local ecosystems. “Between these special programs and the miles of trails that make up the Maricopa Trail, there’s something for everyone—hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers, and horseback riders alike. And after months of reminding visitors to beat the heat by hiking early in the morning or late in the evening, we can finally say, Take a hike!“
Before heading out, consider these tips for a safe and enjoyable hike:
