Ozone Alert: Impending High Pollution Levels in Maricopa County
Residents of Maricopa County should prepare for increased air pollution levels as the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has announced an Ozone High Pollution Advisory. This advisory is scheduled for Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24, 2026, due to expected ozone concentrations surpassing federal health benchmarks.
The formation of ground-level ozone is closely linked to emissions from vehicles, industrial activities, and certain equipment, which react under sunlight. Such conditions are typically more common in spring and summer.
Exposure to elevated ozone levels can affect everyone, particularly children, older adults, and those with respiratory issues like asthma. Children face heightened risk as they spend more time outdoors and their lungs are still developing. During the advisory, limiting outdoor activities is recommended, especially for those with respiratory conditions.
Recommendations to Mitigate Ozone Pollution
ADEQ, in collaboration with the Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD), has suggested several strategies to lessen ozone pollution:
- Encourage teleworking to reduce vehicle emissions.
- Opt for carpooling or public transport instead of solo driving.
- Avoid using drive-thrus; park and go inside instead.
- Consider biking or walking for commutes.
- Use brooms rather than leaf blowers.
- Refuel vehicles after sunset or during cooler hours.
- Choose low-VOC or water-based paints and finishes.
- Delay painting projects during high pollution periods.
- Ensure all chemical containers are properly sealed.

Restrictions During the High Pollution Advisory
The advisory also imposes specific restrictions to curb pollution:
- No wood burning in fireplaces, fire pits, or chimeneas across the county, including those with burn permits.
- Government employees and contractors should refrain from using leaf blowers. Residents are advised to do the same.
- Avoid using off-road vehicles during this period.
