NNSS Enhances Literacy with Book Donations and Nevada Reading Week

Nevada National Security Sites Boost Literacy Through Community Initiatives

The Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) are demonstrating their dedication to community involvement through impactful literacy programs. In Nevada, recent efforts have included a successful book donation drive and active participation in Nevada Reading Week.

Across numerous Nevada offices, donation boxes were set up to collect new or gently used books aimed at students from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Thanks to the generosity of NNSS employees, over 150 books were amassed and handed over to Spread the Word Nevada. This non-profit organization has been working to improve childhood literacy in underserved communities across the state. Since its inception in 2001, Spread the Word Nevada has distributed more than 8 million books to over 1.5 million children.

Further underscoring their commitment, NNSS employees took part in Nevada Reading Week at the Helen Anderson Toland International Academy. For over 25 years, NNSS has maintained a partnership with this local elementary school. During the event, nine volunteers engaged with around 180 students in 25-minute reading sessions. They shared stories and facilitated discussions, bringing the “Book an Adventure” theme of the week to life for the young participants.

“These events are more than just outreach; they’re an essential part of how NNSS connects with and invests in our community,” remarked McKenzie Krause of NNSS, who played a key role in organizing these events. “We’re supporting individual students while helping build a stronger, more educated future by making reading fun at an early age.”
