Walton County Teacher Bree O’Donnell Named 2027 Florida TOY Finalist

In an exciting announcement from the Florida Department of Education, Bree O’Donnell, a dedicated educator from Walton County, has been named one of the finalists for the prestigious 2027 Florida Teacher of the Year award. This recognition places her among only five outstanding teachers selected from a pool of 74 district teachers of the year, highlighting her exceptional contributions to education.

Tallahassee, Fla., May 6, 2026 – Bree O’Donnell, who teaches fourth-grade math and science at Dune Lakes Elementary School, is celebrated for her commitment to student success and educational leadership. Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas praised Ms. O’Donnell, stating, “Great educators not only shape the success of their own students, but also lead and mentor others, strengthening the entire profession.” He added that O’Donnell “embodies these qualities as a teacher leader, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to student achievement and a relentless focus on continuous improvement.”

Russell Hughes, Superintendent of Walton County School District, also commended her, noting, “Ms. O’Donnell is an outstanding educator who motivates students to succeed, uplifts her colleagues, and plays a vital role in the school community.”

Recognizing a Dedicated Educator

Beyond her classroom duties, Bree O’Donnell has made significant contributions to her school and district. She played a key role in developing the district-wide pacing guide for fourth-grade science and mathematics. As the leader of her professional learning community, she promotes collaboration and data-driven improvement among her peers. Her leadership has earned her PLC recognition as a model for the district. Ms. O’Donnell holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Henderson State University.

The Selection Process

The Florida Teacher of the Year finalists were selected from over 170,000 public school teachers statewide. A committee, comprising teachers, principals, parents, and business community members, reviews applications based on teaching ability, communication, professional learning, and community service. The winner, who will be announced in July, will serve as the Christa McAuliffe Ambassador for Education, representing the Department of Education across Florida.
