In a strategic move to intertwine land conservation with military preparedness, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has procured a conservation easement spanning approximately 10,023 acres in Gulf County. This acquisition is part of the broader initiative within the Northwest Florida Sentinel Landscape.
This land deal is designed to support compatible land use near nine military installations and training ranges, while also preserving the region’s working forests amid rapid development. Florida, recognized for having multiple federally designated Sentinel Landscapes, is expanding conservation efforts to align with national defense priorities.
Through investments in regions like Northwest Florida and the Avon Park Air Force Range, the state has fortified partnerships with state, federal, and private entities, ensuring the dual goals of supporting defense operations and conserving natural resources.
DEP Secretary Alexis A. Lambert remarked, “The continued success of Florida Forever reflects Florida’s commitment to forward-thinking policy and strong partnerships that deliver lasting results. By preventing incompatible development and preserving mission-supportive landscapes, these efforts help strengthen military readiness while maintaining the character and ecology of surrounding communities.”
Randy Roy, Naval Air Station Whiting Field Community Planning and Liaison Officer added, “The Northwest Florida Sentinel Landscape has been key in mission assurance, increased readiness and overall sustainability of Naval Air Station Whiting Field’s aviation pilot training. Through this partnership, employment of Readiness Environmental Protection Integration and partner match funding, NAS Whiting has been able to safeguard over 20,000 acres from incompatible development which has been critical in supporting the busiest aviation complex in the world.”
The Florida Forever Program is a cornerstone of the state’s conservation strategy, acquiring land that benefits the environment, recreation, and preservation. This includes enhancing water quality, increasing resilience against storm impacts, and providing habitats for species, all while supporting national security and outdoor recreation.
Since 2019, over $1.5 billion has been allocated to the Florida Forever Program, enabling the DEP to conserve more than 500,000 acres, with 55% secured through conservation easements.
