Florida Launches FACT U.S. History Course as a New Alternative to Advanced Placement
Tallahassee, Fla., May 4, 2026 – The Florida Department of Education has introduced the Florida Advanced Courses and Tests (FACT) U.S. History framework, created as a state-specific alternative to the widely recognized Advanced Placement courses. This initiative marks a significant advancement in offering Florida students more comprehensive educational opportunities.
According to Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas, “Florida continues to lead the way in expanding access to rigorous, high-quality advanced coursework for all students.” The FACT framework aims to provide a complete exploration of American history, ensuring that the educational materials remain free from ideological influences.
Ryan Petty, Chair of the State Board of Education, emphasized the importance of the FACT courses, stating that they offer “academically rigorous, transparent, and high-quality advanced pathways.” He noted that the U.S. History framework focuses on factual accuracy and the use of primary sources, thus aiming to maintain academic integrity in classrooms. Petty added that the ultimate goal is to prepare students with essential knowledge and critical thinking abilities for future endeavors in college, careers, and civic life.
FACT courses emerged from House Bill 1537, which Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law in 2023. They provide students with alternatives to existing courses that may include content such as Critical Race Theory and DEI concepts.
After gaining unanimous approval from the State Board of Education, FACT courses have been added to Florida’s acceleration options. Successful completion of these courses allows students to earn high school and college credits, especially if they enroll in a Florida College System institution or state university.
The first FACT course, College Algebra, was piloted with success this year in 32 schools and will be fully implemented statewide next school year. Building on this foundation, the FACT U.S. History course will begin as a pilot in the upcoming academic year, with invitations extended to districts and charter schools for participation.
Details of the pilot course framework are available at FACT U.S. History Pilot Course Framework. Schools interested in participating can apply via the FACT US History Pilot Application. The registration deadline for the pilot has been extended to May 18th.
