Drivers Urged to Prioritize Safety on U.S. 129’s ‘Tail of the Dragon’
RALEIGH – Travelers along the iconic 11-mile stretch of U.S. 129, famously known as the “Tail of the Dragon,” are being urged to prioritize safety by slowing down, fastening seatbelts, and minimizing distractions. This message comes from officials in North Carolina and Tennessee who are ramping up efforts to ensure safe travel on this renowned route.
The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program (NCGHSP) and the N.C. State Highway Patrol, in collaboration with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and other agencies, have initiated a campaign to enhance safety awareness. This initiative includes educational efforts and a heightened law enforcement presence on one of the nation’s premier roads for motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts.
Throughout Swain and Graham counties, local law enforcement agencies are conducting checkpoints and saturation patrols. Meanwhile, Tennessee Highway Troopers are increasing their patrol activities. Motorists can expect intensified enforcement through the end of the week.
“The goal of this campaign is to ensure the safety of all motorcyclists, drivers and passengers traveling the Tail of the Dragon,” stated NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell. He emphasized that the appeal of this roadway lies in its challenging curves rather than sightseeing opportunities, and highlighted the importance of maintaining safe speeds and avoiding distractions.
During Thursday’s campaign launch, Ezzell was accompanied by representatives from the Swain County Sheriff’s Office, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, and the Western N.C. DWI Task Force.
“Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers are watching for unsafe driving behaviors such as distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, and unrestrained passengers,” explained Tennessee Highway Patrol Lieutenant Rusty Smith. He expressed hope that through voluntary compliance, enforcement, and education, the ‘Tail of the Dragon’ will remain a safe yet thrilling experience for all users.
This safety campaign aligns with the Vision Zero initiative, which seeks to eliminate traffic-related fatalities by transforming the culture of traffic safety across North Carolina and Tennessee.
