Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month: A Month of Recognition and Reflection
Each May, the United States observes Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a special time set aside to recognize the diverse contributions of AAPI communities to the nation’s history, culture, and society. What began as a week-long observance in 1977, thanks to Congressional action, was expanded to a full month in 1990, reflecting the growing acknowledgment of AAPI influences in American life.
The month-long celebration serves not only as a recognition but also as an assertion of the rich cultural heritage, resilience, and creativity of AAPI immigrants and their descendants. Families looking to participate in the festivities can discover numerous activities offered by the Free Library of Philadelphia.
