In a significant leap for aviation safety and sustainability, Dallas Love Field (DAL) has unveiled the world’s first all-electric aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) vehicle. The introduction of this innovative vehicle marks a collaborative effort between Dallas-Fire Rescue (DFR) and the Department of Aviation to enhance emergency response operations and environmental sustainability.
DFR is responsible for the city’s fire protection and emergency medical services, including a specialized fleet of ARFF vehicles at the airport. The newest addition is the PANTHER 6×6, an electric vehicle designed by Rosenbauer International, which was officially deployed on April 26 at ARFF Station 21. This deployment is part of ongoing efforts to modernize and improve operational efficiency and environmental performance.
Key features of the electric PANTHER 6×6 include:
- Acceleration from 0 to 50 mph in under 25 seconds, or under 20 seconds in “Boost Mode,” compared to 28 seconds for traditional diesel vehicles, with a total weight of 91,000 pounds.
- A 40% increase in master stream reach, extending from 190 feet to 250 feet, which enhances firefighting capabilities from safer distances.
- Approximately 50% noise reduction during emergency responses, thanks to its quiet electric motors.
Justin Ball, Chief of the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department, emphasized the importance of innovation, stating, “Innovation and new technology are a critical part of Dallas Fire-Rescue’s overall mission of rapid response, excellence in care, and the highest standards of safety. Adding the electric PANTHER 6X6 to our fleet equips our team with the latest in sustainable technology that will help us enhance our operational capabilities at Dallas Love Field.”
Dallas Love Field is recognized as the busiest medium hub airport in the United States, serving nearly 18 million passengers each year. With an average of 675 aircraft operations daily and ranking second nationally for private aircraft traffic, the airport faces numerous Fire-EMS related responses annually. This level of activity necessitates a robust safety infrastructure and rapid response capabilities.
Patrick Carreno, Director of Aviation at Dallas Love Field, highlighted the importance of the new vehicle, saying, “Improved safety and operational resilience are always top of mind at DAL. The presence and preparedness of our partner, Dallas Fire-Rescue, are invaluable to our airport. With the addition of the electric PANTHER 6×6, we are equipping them with a unique resource that enhances life-saving capabilities while supporting our commitment to energy efficiency and carbon neutrality.”
The electric PANTHER 6×6 sets a new standard in airport firefighting, offering high-performance response capabilities while significantly minimizing environmental impact.
